Connecting through culture is one of the most fulfilling ways to feel at home as an expat, and this November, Singapore offers plenty of opportunities to do just that. This month, celebrate art, film, literature, and even sake at one of Singapore’s exciting festivals. Whether you’re a long-time resident or a total newbie, here’s a roundup of November’s cultural highlights to enjoy with friends and family.

If those blank white walls have been staring back at you for too long, it might be time to bring home some art. The Affordable Art Fair is the perfect opportunity to bring home some incredible pieces without breaking the bank. As its name suggests, the Affordable Art Fair keeps art accessible, with 75% of the pieces priced under $7,500. You can expect to find emerging artists in various mediums, including painting, photography and sculpture.  There are more than 70 local and international galleries to wander through so you’re sure to find something that’s your style. Even if you’re not looking to add a new piece to your collection, the Affordable Art Fair is a great night out with friends.

The Singapore Writers Festival is a must for aspiring writers and literary fans. This annual event brings together Singapore’s strongest voices for panel discussions, workshops, and ‘meet the author’ events. You’ll even have a chance to engage with international authors like Korean novelist Baek Sehee, bestselling author of I Want to Die, But I Want to Eat Tteokbokki and Shehan Karunatilaka writer of the acclaimed novel The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida. With both in-person and virtual options, the festival provides a unique chance to connect with fellow literature lovers, discover new voices, and gain fresh perspectives. This year’s theme, In Our Nature, aims to remind us of our connection to the natural world and how we can navigate this relationship through the stories we tell.

For Francophiles and film lovers, the French Film Festival is a must. Hosted at the iconic indie theatre, The Projector, this festival will screen French films from the past hundred years. Take this rare opportunity to catch films you won’t catch on streaming like Truffaut’s The 400 Blows (Les quatre cents coups) and Mathieu Kassovitz’s La Haine. If you’ve never visited The Projector this is your chance to enjoy the great F&B and hip vibe that The Projector is known for. Why not make a night of it with friends or family? Catch a film, then chat about it over a post-movie meal.

It’s a lively atmosphere that’s perfect for connecting with friends, meeting new people, and exploring the nuanced flavours of sake. For film buffs, the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) is a highlight of the year. This is the best way to catch new independent films from Singapore, Southeast Asia, and beyond. If it’s your first time at a film festival I highly recommend checking out the Foreground series which showcases 12 popular contemporary films from around the world. Beyond screenings, SGIFF also hosts Q&As, panel discussions, and masterclasses, making it a fantastic opportunity to get to know the film community in Singapore.

TEDxSingapore: December 4

This one’s not technically in November, but it’s close enough that I couldn’t resist adding it in. At TEDxSingapore you can get inspired by innovators, thought leaders, and creatives from Singapore. This year’s event will feature a series of thought-provoking talks on topics ranging from technology and sustainability to culture and the future of work. The event will close with Space Party, a dinner party that will give you the chance to have intimate conversations with the speakers and attendees. I definitely recommend it if you’re seeking inspiring conversations about how we can grow and innovate as a community.

November in Singapore has so much on, you’re spoiled for choice. Each of these festivals and events offers a fresh way to get out there, make new connections, and appreciate all that Singapore has to offer. So, gather your friends, save these dates, and make the most of this vibrant city we’re lucky to call home.
