The American Club Celebrates 75 Years of Community

sponsored content

This year, The American Club, celebrates its 75th anniversary. The Club has come a long way since its inception in 1948.

On September 14, 1948, The American Club was officially established with 146 Members, on a rented balcony on the fifth floor of one of Singapore’s first skyscrapers – the Cathay Building at Sophia Road. It consisted of a bar and two second-hand slot machines, and was manned by a total of five employees.

Today, The American Club is located in the heart of Orchard, along Claymore Hill – its 120,000 square-foot clubhouse was refurbished through a $65 million redevelopment project between 2016 and 2019. With over 11,000 Members from 60 countries, the Club’s membership today is 75 times larger than when it was first established in 1948. Its facilities include five dining outlets, a spa, gym, tennis and squash courts, a dedicated youth facility that spans four floors, a wine and gourmet store, and more – run by a strength of 300 full-time Team Members.

A Homecoming in More Ways Than One

Anthea Chuah and her family have been Members of The American Club since they moved to Singapore in 2007 from Portland, Oregon. Anthea is Singaporean, while her husband, Hoa, is American. They met in college and lived in Portland for a few years before moving to Singapore to be closer to her side of the family. It has been 16 years and Anthea, Hoa and their two teenage sons, Tyler and Trevor, love living here. Moving to Singapore and joining The American Club was a homecoming for their family, in more ways than one.

When the kids were younger, they spent all their weekends at the Club, being shuttled between swimming, tennis and taekwondo lessons, plus summer camps. The Club is the family’s home away from home – from celebrating American holidays and traditions to familiar comfort food to connecting with people from all over the world.

The family has had countless birthday celebrations and special occasions celebrated at the Club, and they love the festive-themed activities. For Christmas last year, they had a family photo taken at the Club.

Anthea and her family have formed many friendships either through classes, activities or simply socializing in Club spaces. The Club’s Staff also form an integral part of building a the sense of community and connection, in particular, as certain long-serving Team Members have seen their children grow up. Anthea recounts how, a few years ago, a Youth Team Member visited their home with a ‘get well soon’ card and a gift for her son after he broke his arm during a taekwondo class. They were very touched by the gesture as it spoke to the heart of the Club and how they put their Members first.
